I was a talented but extremely raw person when I first met you Barry. I was in an unprofessional workplace, and although I did not like being there, I got sucked in to the culture. It is kind of hard not to when you spend six years there. Fortunately I had enough basic knowledge about what it takes to be a professional that I was not totally lost. What I was able to do with much help along the way was to recover that professionalism. I will never forget being told by you that furniture sales people are not professional salespeople, they are order takers. At first I thought that was ludicrous, then I got to thinking about it and decided you were right, and that if I were to have any success in this job I needed to majorly up my game, as I did not know how to be a professional. I received plenty of help in that area. You have pushed me mercilessly. Up until now I have never been pushed in my life, certainly not in my professional life. At first it was very off-putting, because I didn’t understand what you were doing. When I figured it out, I likened it to a college basketball team playing a very hard non-conference schedule so that when the conference play begins, they are battle tested and ready to go. Now, I’m battle tested and ready to compete. I went from being a new hire to the #3 salesman in our national company last year.
Speaking of that success, Barry you opened my mind to that possibility. At our convention in Orlando (my first one), you told me I had what it took to be up on the stage the next year. I never thought that would be possible. I always thought of myself as an above average salesperson, never one of the best. You opened my mind with statements like “as a man thinks, so he becomes”. I started asking myself, “why not me?” It was such a huge change in my mind, and I can’t help but believe it all started there.
I have grown more in the last year-and-a-half of knowing you than I have ever grown in my life, and realize that the possibilities of future growth are endless. I will never stop growing.
I don’t have the kind of brain you have. It amazes me sometimes the things you think of, and after I hear those thoughts it seems so obvious to me that they are the right things to do, but I would never have thought of them. That kind of leadership makes me glad I’m following you. I am proud to be led by you. Thanks for growing me.

I admire Barry Watts for his ability to bring together groups of people and empower them to accomplish their goals. The funny thing is that when I first met him, I didn’t like him! I thought he was arrogant. But then I gave him a second chance and I’m very thankful that I did because he is a thoughtful, prayerful, helpful human being . . . he’s a good guy to call a friend. So my advice is that even if you don’t like him the first time you meet him, give him a second chance. You’ll come around!John P. Hayes, Ph.D.
